Here is a ticket I got in the mail this morning:

Kinja'd!!!

I exceeded the speed limit by 9 km/h.

5.6 mph.

This mistake has cost me 168AUD and the loss of one demerit point out of the 12 you get every three years.

Kinja'd!!!

Here is the narrow, winding, congested, full of pedestrians road where I put countless lives at risk.

Fuck this.

I’m not actually bothered by speed cameras in and of themselves. However, if you are going to have such enforcement you need to set higher limits, reflective of how people actually drive. Additionally, if you can catch every speeder, you no longer need huge fines as a deterrent, especially in cases where someone slips up and goes a little over the limit. Unfortunately, these are treated as new sources of revenue rather than safety devices, so we don’t get good policy around them.

Hey, those perks aren’t going to pay for themselves, and no doubt the camera operator is in cahoots with some of the oh so accountable and responsible “authorities”.

Local speeding tickets here max out at 1600 pesos, around 80 USD. Plus, if you’re stubborn you can appeal the fine; the city looses more than 90% of the appeals.

I don’t know how the interstate fines are, those are handled by the Federal Police... I know they take your rear plate away and you have X amount of time to pay it and get it back...

We have speed cameras in Japan but speeding tickets can only be issued if the face of the driver is on the photo... So frontal radars only. Another thing too is that the placing of the license plates in the front...well... you can do pretty much what you want. :D

If someone where to stand in front of my car, it’s impossible to read the whole plate... Therefore speeding cameras don’t really concern me :)

Some people even go certain extremes when it comes to front plate placement...

Kinja'd!!!

Good luck to speed cameras to catch that one :D

Lmao the speed camera operator is the Queensland police force.

“Tampering” with one of the cameras would get you a criminal charge.

That’s really interesting... I always assumed that Japan that would be just as strict if not more.

Surely mounting your front plate like that would get you a fine or something though?

Do they buy the cameras, or have a third party operate them? It’s not like they make the cameras, so someone is making money. In Murka, (crooked) municipalities contract with operators, who take a cut of the fees, and have passed bribes.

It’s only illegal if you get caught :) - although the people in charge of the cameras deserve more tampering.

Nope... never had a problem with my own car either... As you can see here, my license plate is actually UNDER the front bumper... So from far away and low to the ground, it’s visible, but since pictures of speed cameras have to include the face of the driver, they are always taken from up high on the side or over the road, making the top half of the plate invisible... Next car I’m buying will have the front plate installed at an angle too, also making it unreadable by speed cameras...

The company that convinced my state government to set up speed cameras everywhere was Australian. They lasted about two years until judges started dismissing the tickets “written” by them. One of the mobile operators was even killed when some psycho decided to open fire on him while driving down the freeway. I liked the cameras as you always knew where they were. You had to be going 10+ mph over the limit to get a ticket.

I would assume that they buy them? Here in most cases it’s a police owned van or SUV with some sort of camera setup in it. Or  one of these things.

I’m not sure about the other states. I do know that New South Wales has mobile cameras operated by third party companies, and the penalty for messing with those is not as severe since they’re not police equipment directly.

In any case, it’s a money printing scheme that works fantastically. If Australia was this concerned about the safety of its people it should just ban private car use entirely.

Well that changes my perspective on driving in Japan significantly.

I’m organising finances for an end of year trip with a friend currently and renting a car over there has been a bucket list item of mine for years and years.

I love your FB, we need more people keeping them running!

Buys them from a politico’s brother-in-law etc, no doubt. These schemes are corrupt wherever they exist. As you say, if it was about safety, the scene would be much different. Messing with a camera shouldn’t be hard, just wear a mask.

It’s also a big obstacle for autonomous cars - what happens when cars always mind the rules? A huge revenue stream for the answers-to-nobody sector will vanish overnight. Be prepared for more taxes to compensate, something needs to fund the ego and perks.

I recall when there was controversy over cameras in Chicago, an “authority” flatly admitted they couldn’t afford to do without the revenues.

I’ve been pulled over on the highway for around 10mph over.

250AUD and 3 points :)

At like 11pm on a weeknight.

SA22C! :) They’ve been called FB in the US only from 1981 when VIN became mandatory. Everywhere else in the world they are all called SA22C from ‘78 until ‘85.

Don’t forget you won’t be able to hide the rental car frontal plate though :)

I can see it now:

Stamp duty: $13000
Luxury car tax: $38000
Federal Autonomous Infrastructure Levy: $1700
Registration: $900

But please!! tempt me with tiny ‘carbon offset’ and ‘electric vehicle’ rebates!! Let’s keep the country safe!!

In Arizona 10 over on a freeway is like a $30 ticket and no points on your license. I once got pulled over on a surface street doing 12 over and the cop just gave me a warning.

i got let off when doing 180km/h in a 100km/h zone years ago. mitigating factors for it were.

1. i sort of knew the cop

2. soon as i saw them, i stopped for them.

3. i was in a genuine rush that day

10mph over in the Midwest wouldn’t even get the cops attention. They know they just need to wait 5 minutes for the jackass going 15-20 over before they’ll put their coffee down.

I drive 7-10 over everywhere I go and I’ve never been pulled over in 20+ years of driving.

10 over the speed limit in Pennsylvania is about $160 and 3 points. $110 is not for the speeding fine; it is additional fees tacked on to the ticket.

Think of the children! Clutch those pearls!

I also would wager the people in charge of making and enforcing these rules have much greater perks, especially in retirement, than the normal worker. The funds gotta come from somewhere.
